Everything is Personal

How Al Harrington Became the NBA’s First Weed Mogul

Episode Summary

Time to walk it off as Len and Jon welcome former professional basketball player Al Harrington, who played 16 seasons in the NBA with the Indiana Pacers, Atlanta Hawks, Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks, Denver Nuggets, Orlando Magic, and the Washington Wizards. One of the first NBA players to come "out of the cannabis closet" about his use, Al is the founder of Viola Industries, which cultivates cannabis in several states and is named for Al's grandmother, who found relief from her glaucoma symptoms with cannabis use. Toxic positivity and lies everyone's parents tell them are discussed, along with knitters, the virtues of reggae, the Golden Rule, effectively ending a Zoom call, curling, Elvis Presley's legacy, Canadian accents, "You're killing me Smalls," and Len shares a traumatic eating experience that has stayed with him throughout his life. Len and Jon also spend time with some of their favorite rap and hip hop intros, and in this week's Have You Heard Jon takes a pass as Len continues his effort to whet Jon's appetite for mid-70s funk by illustrating funk's connection to modern hip hop.
